FROM SPACE TO STORY
From Space to Story is a storytelling workshop using a documentary method and narrative process developed over more than two decades by the filmmaker, writer and senior lecturer Hanna Heilborn.
The workshop From Space to Story will give you tools in examine and processing “the reality” as a foundation for any storytelling. You will be coached in a documentary method and narrative process applied to projects of various formats.
ABout
METHOD
The starting point of the workshop is investigating and defining an existing space, as a catalysator for your artistic process. You will examine a close surrounding or a location from a memory or an archive. The process evokes the creation of organic scenery, character development and situations. It concretizes the elements of your story as well as deepens it. The method will be applied on a project of your own, an individual project or a collective work, already in development or to be found.
In the first part of the workshop, you will be collecting and building content, through research of a space and writing assignments. The research can also involve photographing, sketching, recording sound and/or interviewing people. If you use, or want to use, dialogue one part of From Space to Story focuses on dialogue-writing assignments, where a method called “the power of small words” is tutored and trained.
The dramaturgy, the structuring of the story content, is worked on in the end of the workshop. It opens for an orchestration that follows your vision, temperament and artistic process. Your story will be chiseled and defined to its core. Having said that, From Space to Story will not push it into pre-fixed models or premature structuring nor formatting.
VISIOn
The goal with From Space to Story is to give new perspectives on narrative processes and storytelling. The workshop also focuses on strategies for sustainable artistic development: how to stand grounded and create a safe place in the process, where the process might become the result itself. It equips you for future meetings with co-workers, financiers and the upcoming audience or target group. One part of the workshop involves reflections on ethics and various discourses of our time.
From Space to Story applies to any narrative process and media – and its method can be used in any storytelling, text, sound and/or visual-based, performative or mediated. During the years the workshop has been coached to storytellers from a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. Hence: From Space to Story bring your unique voice and artistic process to life and build stories that need to be told.
Defintion of space
The definition of space ranges from a physical room, outdoor, indoor, galactical, to an internal place – a memory, a state of mind, a dream, a mental place. The word “space”, itself, has fewer limitations than the words “place” and “site”.
A place is a position/location often used with people and objects. A site is where something is at, used for architectural places, buildings, zones or blocks. Example 1: We are sightseeing in the morning, then we eat at a Falafel place. Example 2: There are great places for dining in New York and a lot of memorial sites.
A space embraces all the above-mentioned physical rooms, as well as those untouchables in the outer world but most present in the internal – in your memory, heart or soul. A space can be concrete as well as portray emotions and thoughts, yours or others, it can be interpreted from a poetry, an autobiography etc., it can exist in the now, in history, move over time or have a non-existing timeframe.
A space can also be a structure: the school system, communism, capitalism, the subway map, a political agenda, an internship, and family relations to mention some. Nevertheless, note that all here-mentioned spaces contain physical elements as well as metaphysical, emotional or mental elements.

From Space to Story was founded by me,
Hanna Heilborn, around 1998.
The workshop stems from a close collaboration and friendship with my former mentor Outii Nyytäjää (born 1935, dead 2017), finish writer, dramaturg, translator and columnist. Initially From Space to Story was held as a film scriptwriting workshop at Design and Media School’s such as Beckman’s College of Design and Forsberg’s School of Design and Advertisement, Stockholm. Over the years my method and pedagogy has proven to fit narrative processes within a wide range of artistic practices, and I have supported storytellers from various experiences and backgrounds, students as well as senior artists.
From Space to Story are and has been involving writers, directors and producers within different film practices, Illustrators, Graphic Designers, animators, cinematographers, Art Directors, graphic novelists, architects, digital media artists, fashion designers, editors and other visual-, sound- and/or performative artists as well as journalists. It is and has been held regularly at Konstfack, University of Arts, Craft and Design, Stockholm, since early 2000 -, and occasionally at JMK, Stockholm University dept. of Media Studies and Stockholm University of the Arts as well as internationally at universities and schools
such as Supinfocom, Arles and Valenciennes, France, and Joshibi University of the Arts, Tokyo, Japan. The coaching method used in From Space to Story is also implemented in my daily work with emerging filmmakers, as co-owner of the production company Story AB, www.story.se. It is as well used as a tool when assigned as pitch-tutor and consultant for programs such as Doc Forward, Nordisk Panorama, and former Twelve for the future for EDN (European Documentary Network) etc. I have also used the method as a dramaturg, assigned by production companies and independent filmmakers in various production-stages, as a catalyst for a project description, in scriptwriting or as a tool in the editing room. From Space to Story also suits for commercial companies, governmental or non-governmental organizations in the work with building identity.
From Space to Story is held in English or upon request in Swedish. It can also be translated through a translator into fit specific language needs, such as sign language. It is held at site, on-line or in a combination of both.
